People looking for a lift and motorists interested in cutting down on their driving costs are now able to connect through a new transportation option in Lexington.

Lextran has partnered with Zimride, an online ride-matching service operated by Enterprise Rent-A-Car, to set up a network.

Drivers and passengers create profiles on Zimride and are then able to offer or request rides, connecting with others who are heading the same direction. Users can sign up through Facebook, which allows participants to get a sense of who they would be riding with. Payment is made through Paypal after the ride is complete.

“We believe that Zimride will create more carpools and vanpools throughout the Bluegrass region and surrounding areas,” Rocky Burke, Lextran general manager, said in a news release. “The service complements our bus system well, and it is an easy-to-use and sustainable transportation option for area residents. If you are heading out of town for the weekend or commuting to work or school every day, you can post a ride and share the costs by driving with neighbors and colleagues.”

Zimride was started in 2007 by the same guys who went on to create Lyft, the ride-sharing program known for putting big pink mustaches on the cars of those who drive for it. The company sold Zimride to Enterprise last year.
